2-2
Today was the first day of class and it went very well. I really like my teacher, Mavi, and I was amazed at how much I was able to converse. I made a lot of mistakes as well, but overall I am very pleased with how much I have progressed in the last year. Cora really likes her teacher and did a lot of work today. Tate’s teacher, however, does not speak any English so I am not sure this is going to work for him. There are lots of pages of drawings in his notebooks. It looks like he did about half of what Cora did. We will see how tomorrow goes.
This morning was very cold here. It really is like spring. The mornings are cold and the afternoons are very warm. We have to shed clothes as the day progresses and then put them back on in the evenings.
This afternoon we have a Salsa lesson and the kids have already decided that they are not doing it. I don’t know whether to bribe them or just let them sit in the corner. I am really starting to crave some time away from them. Tate can be VERY annoying at times and he seems to be pulling out all the stops right now.
The city of Antigua is very international. There are a lot of tourists from many different places. They are either young people in their 20’s or people in their 50’s to 60’s. People stare at us a lot. I don’t know if it is because it is so rare to see white children here, like Cora, or because we are walking around with Tate, who looks Mexican. He really does not look Guatemalan. Anyway, there are many nationalities here.I am sorry to say that I haven’t taken many pictures yet. I spend most of my time making sure my children are not getting hit by a car, knocking their heads into the windows that stick out into the narrow sidewalks, or tripping over the broken pavement. What? They are 8 and 11, surely they can take care of themselves. You would think! Tate almost knocked himself out on a concrete window ledge and has fallen off the sidewalk countless times. Cora is constantly stepping out into the street without looking. It is amazing how vigilant I have to be, and how exhausting it is. I have spent the afternoon questioning my sanity in taking my kids on these trips by myself. I have a feeling I will look back at all this and say “What was I thinking?!”
It is almost dinner time here (7pm) and I am not sure I can get through it. I am so tired that I know I will make a lot of mistakes with my Spanish. After dinner I will study for a while and then to sleep by 9 if I am lucky.
Buenas Nochces!
